Success: Mine or Yours

Many times it is emphasised that humans are inherently weak and all have our weaknesses. Thus, the importance of relying on and helping each other is widely accepted. However, some people end up using this as a means to depend excessively on another person. They use it as a reason to convince themselves that they are not wrong for relying on others to do their responsibilities or use it as an excuse to explain to others that he is too incapable to do it himself. While some people do this intentionally, some people are reluctantly carried to success in achieving their personal goals despite not doing much.

Those that never intended to be excessively reliant on others but ended up being carried to success feel no joy. In fact, the feelings that they feel most likely comprise of guilt, shame and incompetence. They cannot be satisfied with achieving good results as a result of others hard work and not their own.

If one has not worked hard to achieve it and simply depending on others, the “success” attained is not success. It is the same as taking the certificate of accomplishment from someone else and photocopying it.

How could it be a success if nothing was learned in the process of attaining it?

All it is, is a good result.

In the Cambridge dictionary, success is simply defined as good results that you hoped to attain. However, I feel that the definition provided does not suffice. I believe that one’s success is something that can only be obtained through hard work, perseverance and ultimately, your own effort. Unless your efforts played a crucial role in a group effort to achieve success, the success attained by means of the efforts of others alone is not something you could call your own.

The things we dream of and hope for are usually things that would bring us great benefit. That is why we dream of such things. Often times, they are things that are seemingly unattainable and impossible, which is what makes us want them so much. We want to attain them and feel the joy of success in obtaining something we had yearned for. Joy that cannot be felt from success brought about by the efforts of those around you. All you would gain is the end result and not the bountiful experience you would have had if you worked hard for it yourself. In the end, that would mean that you are missing out on the joy of reaping the rewards of your own hard work. As Arthur Ashe once said,

“Success is the journey, not the destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.”

The outcome can always change, if you achieved success as a result of the efforts of others, you may not be able to maintain it. You would not have enough experience and knowledge on how to maintain your status quo. This is evident as it is not your success, but the success of those around you who made it possible. The only way to achieve success in all you do is to constantly put in your effort, learn from every failure, and never stop advancing forward.

Make the effort and success will be yours.

My thoughts are always fleeting. Writing is the only way I can remember all the things that once crossed my mind.
