My Top 3 Music Channels on YouTube

Okay, so this week’s song lyric sunday theme is too difficult for me so instead of suggesting a song today, I decided to share my favourite Japanese artistes on YouTube.

In 3rd place, we have Minami.

To be completely honest, the only reason she’s only 3rd is because she has so few songs out on YouTube…

In 2nd place, we have Zutomayo/ACA.

The only “downside” to her music is that English captions take a while to be submitted/approved on YouTube and her song lyrics are sometimes difficult to decipher. However, every once in a while a few lines will jump out at you.

In 1st place, we have TUYU.

Honestly, she’s my favourite artiste not just because English captions come out rather quickly, but because her lyrics are always so simple and easy to understand. Not just that, her lyrics often hit hard. Examples would be “Compared Child” and “Even Tears Withered”.

To be honest, like Minami, she doesn’t have many songs. However, she’s easily my favourite because of how hard her song lyrics hit me.

That’s it for today!

Sorry I couldn’t participate in this round of song lyric sunday!

Song Lyric Sunday – Restless/Solo

During this time in quarantine, many of us are bound to our homes and can barely tell which day of the week it is. Our days become so routine that everyday seems the same. As we come to get used to staying at home 24/7, some of us may be feeling restless and uncomfortable. The usual everyday sunlight that would shine upon us on our daily commute to work or school is no more and we are confined within our houses all-day everyday. How does one maintain a sense of self in these times?

Song Lyric Sunday – Hometown

So, I don’t know any songs that are about Singapore so I’m just going to go ahead with “こんなこと騒動” by ずっと真夜中でいいのに。(Zutomayo) for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday.

I believe the song title can roughly be translated to “Such a Disturbance”.

Honestly, the English translation available doesn’t seem to be the best and I can’t really confidently say I know what the artist is trying to convey.

However, I will just share my thoughts as always.

I think there’s a slightly better translation in the comments section by Kaori (posted 6 months ago) as compared to the subtitles if you’re interested

The song describes a “stagnant” town lacking in spirit where all you hear are “stagnant” greetings that seem so trivial and meaningless that it’s nothing but noise. Before the circuit breaker (quarantine equivalent), whenever I went out I just drowned out the noises of those around me. After all, they didn’t matter to me and were just the chattering of people trying to forget about work or people complaining about work.

Everyone is just going about their daily lives as they are used to the society we live in. Work hard and progress through life. That’s it.

There are no choices to be made, we just go with the flow.

With people we know all around us, we don’t want to get unwanted attention, we don’t want to be hated. We try to conform to those around us but at the same time we don’t want to lose who we are. Our hometown is full of people trying to shape us into what they feel is the best version of ourselves. Thus, we don’t want to disappoint them.

However, we still want to live true to ourselves.

How can we achieve both at the same time?

Or perhaps, should we speak up to those who we’ve known for a long time and try to gain freedom to meet new people and forge a path for ourselves?

Whatever it is, we need to be determined to face forward no matter the results.
