To Be Forgotten

I just watched “Natsume Yuujinchou: Ephemeral Bond”. Yet again, we have the protagonist’s grandmother, Natsume Reiko making an appearance in a youkai’s memory. For the short few scenes she appears in, she comments on the curse placed on the youkai, saying that it is better to be forgotten.

It’s a sad statement. Yet, it holds some truth.

Sometimes, we wish that others would simply forget about us.

Be it due to foolish mistakes we made in the past, or simply to avoid the inevitable consequence of being judged based on who you once were.

When you meet again, how should you react? Are we obligated to greet them and treat them nicely because we once knew each other? Or can we simply leave the past in the past? After all, in all likelihood, both of us would most likely have changed a lot since we knew each other in the past. Perhaps, it would be better to treat each other like we have never met before.

Despite saying all this, most people would like to not be forgotten.
To be remembered for the things they have done.
To be remembered for who they were.
To be remembered… for who they are.

The irreplaceable memories they had together with others, they cherish it and hold on to them no matter how much they may both change. To be forgotten… is something that is too saddening to think of.

Something… that they want to avoid at all costs.

to be forgotten

Would you like to be forgotten and start afresh? Or would you prefer to be remembered despite everything and continually forge your own path while acknowledging who you once were and accepting it?
